New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a significant funding boost aimed at modernizing and enhancing safety features at airports across the state. As revealed by the Governor's Office, the $25 million from the AIR NY Aviation Capital Grant Program will be distributed to 16 public-use airports. This financial injection is intended to not only to quickly improve airport operational efficiency but to also ramp up security, weather resilience, and the potential for economic growth within their respective regions.
The grants will support a diverse array of projects, including construction of new hangars, advanced security infrastructure, and eco-friendly initiatives like deicing fluid treatments. According to Governor Hochul, this action represents "historic investments" that will allow the airports to invigorate their "local communities with new opportunities for economic growth and tourism." These sentiments were echoed by New York State Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez, who stated that these investments will make it easier "for people to live, work and do business here," as per the Governor's Office press release.
The program, administered by the New York State Department of Transportation, has a precedent of funding impactful projects such as new security facilities, weather monitoring systems, and aircraft refueling sites. In 2023 alone, the program distributed approximately $49 million for infrastructure improvement at 36 airports. This year's major beneficiaries include Syracuse Hancock International Airport and Buffalo Niagara International Airport, each securing $2.5 million for snow control and deicing fluid management projects, respectively.
Funded projects range widely, with the Adirondack Regional Airport set to receive $377,100 for electric ground service equipment and Ithaca Tompkins International Airport being awarded $1.35 million for geothermal heating and cooling. Selection for the competitive grants is based on criteria such as economic impact, alignment with development plans, and energy efficiency. Each recipient airport must be listed in the 2018 State Airport System Plan and proposals are to carefully align with objectives like safety enhancement and emissions reduction.
As part of New York's sustained investment in its infrastructure, the Department of Transportation remains committed to creating a transportation system that is not only safe and reliable, but also equitable and resilient. This latest round of funding reinforces the state's dedication to fostering a network of airports that not only serve as mere points of transit but as critical hubs for economic activity.
