Over the recent weekend, Novato Police Department made multiple arrests in connection with an auto burglary on Marin Valley Drive. According to a social media post by the department, the arrests followed a crime tip received last week that included camera footage showing a yellow Mini Cooper involved in the incident.
Having been alerted to look for the suspect vehicle, the patrol teams scored a breakthrough last Saturday night. A Patrol Sergeant noticed the distinct yellow car near South Novato Blvd and Redwood Blvd, circling the neighborhood before pulling into a 7-Eleven parking lot. An inspection of the vehicle revealed open containers of alcohol, and underage occupants present, all of which added up to suspicion given the car's connection to the prior auto burglary.
Upon reviewing the camera footage against the individuals in the car, authorities confirmed the three occupants were those involved in the burglary. Arrested were 19-year-olds Arturo Mercado and Freddie Nunez Guzman, and 18-year-old Miguel Mercado, all San Rafael residents. The trio now face charges including auto burglary and conspiracy, with Arturo Mercado also charged with accessory to a crime.
The Novato Police's statement extended thanks to the community member whose video footage played a pivotal role in these apprehensions, "a big thank you to the community member who provided high quality video footage of the vehicle and occupants ultimately leading to the arrests in this case." In light of this success, the department encourages other residents to join their Camera Registry Program.
Novato Police urge anyone who notices suspicious activity to contact them immediately at 415-897-4361 or call 9-1-1 in an emergency. Reports can also be filed online, and crime tips can be submitted via email or text message.
