A nurse suffered an assault earlier today within the confines of Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, according to police reports. The Daily Voice documents a 53-year-old nurse encountering a man, later identified as 40-year-old Raul Guzman Campos of Hempstead, after she went to check why the man had been using a hallway bathroom for an unusually long period.
The situation quickly escalated into a disturbing incident when the nurse, checking on a man believed to have been in isolation for an extended period, reportedly found Campos damaging the bathroom ceiling with a sharp object. Within moments, "Campos then charged at the nurse and struck her in the back with the weapon," resulting in a fall and a subsequent head injury, the report detailed by The Daily Voice says.
Two Second Precinct officers, who happened to be on-site for unrelated matters, quickly intervened and subdued Campos, preventing the situation from escalating further. As a result of the incident, the nurse sustained back lacerations and head trauma and is now receiving treatment at the same hospital where she works.
Investigation into Campos' possessions revealed a plastic bag filled with a brown powdery substance believed heroin, tucked away in the wallet he carried, according to PIX11. Arrested at the scene, Campos now faces multiple charges, including second-degree assault, menacing, weapon possession, criminal mischief, and drug possession. Authorities stated that he will be arraigned once his medical condition permits.
