A Stanislaus County man faces serious charges after being accused of the sexual exploitation of two minors. Gonzalo Hernandez, 37, of Oakdale, was indicted last Thursday, and the case details were released following his arrest. According to an indictment unsealed that day, Hernandez is facing two counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, as was announced by Acting U.S. Attorney Michele Beckwith, reported the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Between August 2, 2021, and November 13, 2023, Hernandez allegedly produced sexually explicit images of one minor. He is also charged with coercing a second minor into similarly exploitative acts in March 2024. As the investigation led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in partnership with the Oakdale Police Department continues to unfold, this case comes to show the persistent efforts to combat the crimes against the most vulnerable of our society. "This case is the product of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Oakdale Police Department," the U.S. Attorney's Office statement noted.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Shelley D. Weger is leading the prosecution in this case. The indictment highlights both the serious allegations and the coordinated efforts of law enforcement agencies in tackling the matter. If convicted, Hernandez faces a minimum sentence of 15 years and up to 30 years in prison for each count, along with a potential fine of up to $250,000.
The sentencing will be determined by the court’s discretion, taking into account statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which consider various elements. It is important to note that the charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The Department of Justice’s Project Safe Childhood initiative, launched in May 2006, focuses on combating offenses like those Hernandez is accused of by coordinating resources to prosecute offenders and protect children.
