A confrontation in southeast Houston has left an officer and a suspect both with gunshot wounds after a late-night encounter on July 17. According to the City of Houston News, Houston Police Department officers responded to a report of a suspicious individual carrying a weapon in the 10500 block of Mykawa Road; as officers approached the man at approximately 11:35 p.m., the suspect reportedly opened fire on them.
The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Bobby Jose Alvarado, is facing two counts of aggravated assault of a peace officer, arising from the incident which unfolded when Alvarado allegedly shot at the officers as they exited their vehicle, seriously wounding Sergeant P. George, who has served with the HPD since February 1997 and is assigned to the Southeast Patrol Division. The second officer, Sergeant K. Burch, who joined HPD in April 2014, was not injured, although he discharged his weapon in response to the threat. After the exchange of gunfire, life-saving measures were administered to both the injured officer and the assailant; both were subsequently transported to area hospitals, where they were listed in stable condition.
