The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Arizona has charged 147 individuals with immigration-related offenses in a weeklong operation, according to a recent press release. Beginning from last Saturday through last Friday, as part of Operation Take Back America, 71 cases were filed regarding illegal re-entry, while 57 charges were brought for illegal entry; additionally, 19 individuals faced accusations of alien smuggling.
The operation backed by multiple federal agencies, including ICE ERO, HSI, U.S. Border Patrol, DEA, FBI, USMS, and ATF, targeted a range of illicit activities, like in the case of United States v. Ismael Viera-Villa; Viera-Villa, after a failed attempt to elude Border Patrol, was charged along with Fausto Gil-Cruz for a conspiracy related to transporting illegal aliens for profit, after agents found several hidden passengers in his vehicle. In another instance, United States v. Carlos Meza-Alcantar, a semi-truck harboring 14 individuals was intercepted following surveillance, resulting in charges for Meza-Alcantar for the transportation of illegal aliens for profit.
A particularly significant case emerged with United States v. Blademir Angulo Audeves; Audeves faced several charges including harboring illegal aliens and illegal possession of firearms, upon a discovery of employing at least twelve unauthorized aliens and housing them, which was revealed after a five-month-long probe leading to the execution of search warrants, uncovering three firearms in his possession. Attributing to the gravity of such crimes, these charges, as noted by the U.S. Attorney's Office, form a crucial component of the governmental initiative aiming to curtail illegal immigration, dismantle cartels, and eradicate transnational criminal organizations while enhancing public safety.
It's important to emphasize that a criminal complaint represents merely an allegation and not proof of guilt, as all defendants, like those in the reported cases, are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, however, the tempo of these operations does signify a clear strategy by federal authorities to intensify their efforts against illegal immigration and related crime. Operation Take Back America is clearly seen as a spearhead in this broader campaign, pooling resources from OCDETFs and Project Safe Neighborhood to confront these challenges with a unified front.
