Yesterday, a large warehouse fire in Oakland quickly escalated, demanding a significant response from local fire crews. The incident began in a commercial warehouse and spread to an adjacent vacant residential building, a utility pole, and several vehicles, according to a social media post from the Oakland Fire Department.
The fire reported at 4:55 PM in the 5200 block of East Eighth Street triggered a multi-alarm response that included more than 75 firefighters. Despite the size and speed of the blaze, first responders successfully contained the damage and prevented further spread to occupied homes and buildings. Officials from the Oakland Police Department, aided by managing traffic in the densely populated neighborhood, reported the Oakland Fire Department.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the original site of the inferno, the warehouse, might have been used as a cannabis grow site, ABC7 News reported, citing Oakland Fire Department spokesperson Michael Hunt. The fire was under control by 8:00 PM that evening, confirming no injuries had occurred.
While firefighters were tamping down the warehouse blaze, a separate incident drew their attention. A quarter-acre vegetation fire ignited near Bishop O'Dowd High School at 9500 Stearns Avenue. It was swiftly controlled with 30 firefighters on the scene, extinguishing the flames by 7:38 PM. The cause of the warehouse and vegetation fires is under investigation, according to ABC7 News.
