Tragedy struck early Sunday morning as the body of a pedestrian was discovered alongside U.S. Highway 50 in Delta County after being hit by multiple vehicles, sparking an ongoing investigation by the Colorado State Patrol (CSP). KDVR reported that the Delta County Sheriff’s Office received a call before dawn, at around 5 a.m., alerting them to the grim find near Starr Nelson Road, just outside the town of Delta.
Responders arrived at a scene that forced the closure of the road as the authorities began to piece together the events that led to the fatality. CSP indicated that the person was likely struck in the middle lane of the highway, according to CBS News Colorado. In their efforts to unravel the incident, two drivers have come forward and are now involved in the investigation. Their cooperation could provide crucial details to authorities, as it seems, that at least one more driver may have been involved in the accident.
The impact on traffic flow was significant, with the westbound lane of Highway 50 closed near Starr Nelson Road for several hours while law enforcement and investigators processed the scene. The closure continued well into the afternoon, with the road finally reopening at around 1 or 2 p.m. Sunday, as noted by 9NEWS. Motorists were advised to seek alternate routes to avoid extended delays.
