Authorities in Pennsylvania have arrested Shannon Nicole Womack, accused of exploiting the healthcare system through identity theft and deception. Womack, believed to have used more than twenty aliases to secure employment at various healthcare facilities throughout the state, faces numerous charges. According to WTAE, the charges include endangering the welfare of care-dependent persons, among others.
Womack's scheme, as reported by WPXI, unraveled during a traffic stop in Pittsburgh, where police discovered her expired Georgia vehicle registration and multiple active warrants from various states. While searching her vehicle, troopers found multiple forms of identification and medical paraphernalia, which linked her to prescription medication thefts from the healthcare facilities she infiltrated.
The list of facilities duped by Womack includes Eldercrest Rehabilitation and numerous others, where she was not retained due to professional misconduct. In one grave instance at Southmont of Presbyterian SeniorCare, over 120 oxycodone pills went missing under her watch, directly affecting five residents, as WPXI detailed. Investigators clarified that Womack is not a licensed medical professional in any state.
Investigations also unearthed that Womack created her staffing agency to funnel work to herself, effectively serving as her secretary to orchestrate her employment at these health facilities, said Trooper Rocco Gagliardi.
With Womack listed on Georgia’s website for nursing impostor alerts, the case highlights the broader challenge of verifying credentials within the healthcare system, an industry already burdened by the demands of the pandemic. The Department of Health has acknowledged the situation and is reportedly determining the next steps to prevent such occurrences in the future.
