The City of Phoenix's own Energy Manager, Carlos Aguiar Hernandez, has recently joined the ranks of the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) 2025 Executive Energy Leadership program, a prestigious group consisting of 19 selected leaders aimed at developing energy best practices across various sectors, City of Phoenix reported.
Phoenix official Michael Hernandez has joined a national initiative focused on advancing clean energy solutions, according to a statement released by the city. Hernandez will work alongside leaders from across the country to explore strategies aimed at meeting sustainability and energy goals. He stated that the collaboration is an opportunity to learn from experienced professionals and apply innovative approaches to support Phoenix’s transition to renewable energy. The city has emphasized that these efforts align with its broader commitment to building a resilient and affordable clean energy future.
The four-month NREL initiative, which got underway in June, invites the selected decision-makers to delve into energy technologies and analytical methods courtesy of direct interaction with the lab's experts and partners. The program features site visits to NREL facilities in Boulder and Golden, Colorado, where participants can engage with the forefront of energy research. As per the program's structure, Hernandez and his cohort will be expected to conclude their study by presenting an energy project specific to their community's needs.
"NREL’s world-class research in renewable energy will provide cutting-edge insights into emerging energy technologies, strengthen our ability to lead with data-driven solutions, and foster valuable collaborations," said Carla De La Chapa, Chief Sustainability Officer for the Phoenix Office of Sustainability. She highlighted the strategic importance of Hernandez's participation, which she believes will reinforce Phoenix's commitment to innovation, climate leadership, and the pursuit of making clean energy more accessible to its residents, according to a statement on the City of Phoenix website.
