Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) has initiated a rail replacement project, which will result in a portion of the Red Line being closed today through Saturday. According to information released by CBS News, the track replacement will affect the area near Dawn Station, updating infrastructure that has been in place since 1982.
Commuters are facing a service suspension between Westfield Station and South Hills Junction during this period. WTAE reported that a Red Line rail shuttle will operate between Westfield and Overbrook Junction stations to mitigate disruption. Riders traveling to downtown Pittsburgh are advised to board the detoured Red Line shuttle to Overbrook Junction first, then walk to Willow Station to catch an inbound train to the city.
Those heading outbound from the city to destinations such as Castle Shannon, Mt. Lebanon, Dormont, and Beechview will need to take an outbound Blue, Silver, or Red Line car from the city to Willow Station. According to the information shared by CBS News, commuters should then make the trek to the inbound platform of Overbrook Junction to board the Red Line shuttle. Additionally, those traveling to South Hills can continue their journey on regular service from Overbrook Junction.
Unfortunately for daily riders, during the rail replacement work, the Dawn Avenue bus stop on the South Busway will be out of commission, along with the busway ramp from West Liberty Avenue and the stairs to Dawn Avenue. "If there are going to be any repairs or changes, then they should hurry up and fix it soon because it affects everyone's daily life quite a bit," Red Line rider Erika Guillermo Vidal told WTAE. With no feasible temporary stop available to be safely provided in this area, travelers have been advised by PRT to seek alternative transportation options.
For anyone with questions or in need of assistance during this period, PRT's customer service is accessible via phone at 412-442-2000 or through live chat on the PRT website.
