The Port of San Diego is riding the summertime wave with a nod to Parks and Recreation Month, painting July with a splash of outdoor appreciation and waterfront frolics. In the spirit of unity with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and echoing communities across the U.S., the Port's Board of Commissioners has declared July the month to spotlight San Diego Bay's beauty and the recreational activities it provides, as per the Port of San Diego.

"Our parks and recreational programs bring people together to play, connect, and create memorable waterfront experiences," were the words by Chair Danielle Moore, evidencing the Port's commitment to boosting quality of life and enhancing community relations—especially given their jurisdiction over 23 parks embedded in five member cities, as reported by the Port of San Diego. The Port's offerings range from granting upwards of 600 park use permits each year, pairing up for tourism-boosting events, and launching free community happenings; all this, while also serving as custodian to the Tidelands Art Collection, which enriches public spaces with culture and history.

New green spaces are germinating along the waterfront, as the Port recently unveiled Sweetwater Park, a verdant escape in Chula Vista Bayfront and has its sight set on further beautifications—a sprouting splash pad and pirate-inspired play area are on deck for National City's Pepper Park, and design talks are flowing for César Chávez Park's future phases in Barrio Logan, the Port confirmed in the aforementioned release. Not to be left behind, the multi-year Freedom Park project is a collaboration with the USS Midway Museum to honor the region's military heritage on Navy Pier, expected to unfurl its grand military tributes come 2028.

For four decades, NRPA has shepherded July as the official month to embrace parks and recreation, with 2025's "Build Together, Play Together" theme saluting the hardworking parks and recreation professionals crafting lasting legacies in their communities—a nationwide high-five wrapping around the third week with Parks and Recreation Professionals Day slated for July 18.
