A Puerto Rican man has been charged with multiple counts related to illegal firearm purchases in Florida. Esai Pastrana Cruz, aged 30, is facing accusations of conspiring to make false statements to a firearms dealer, with the potential of up to 15 years in federal prison if found guilty, as reported by the United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida.
Between mid-2019 and late 2023, the indictment alleges that Pastrana Cruz engaged in straw buying—purchasing guns on behalf of persons who may not legally do so or prefer not to have the purchases tracked to them he also reportedly lied about being the actual purchaser while conducting transactions at federally licensed firearms outlets. This indictment comes as part of Operation Take Back America, which aims to crack down on illegal immigration and dismantle cartel operations affecting local communities with violent crime.
While an indictment is not evidence of guilt, it does pose serious charges that will bring Pastrana Cruz before the justice system for scrutiny, maintaining the presumption of innocence until proven otherwise. The case against him includes a move by the government to seize all firearms and ammunition tied to the alleged offenses and is the result of an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Assistant United States Attorney Jeff Chang will prosecute the case, putting a spotlight on the ongoing efforts to address, what Operation Take Back America describes as, the "invasion of illegal immigration" and the pervasive threat of transnational criminal organizations. According to the official statement, the operation aligns various Department of Justice resources including OCDETFs and Project Safe Neighborhood for what they see as a battle to safeguard communities.
