Queen Creek resident Laine Dyess has found remarkable relief from decades of shoulder pain thanks to a cutting-edge procedure provided by Dr. Elizabeth Batterton at Banner Health. Rather than undergoing total shoulder replacement surgery, Dyess opted for injections using his own plasma and bone marrow, a treatment that significantly reduced pain and improved function. "I had a what's called a subluxation, where it came out of socket, went back in and it tore some cartilage in there and some ligaments," Dyess recounted in an interview with FOX 10 Phoenix.
The innovative method involves harvesting the patient's own platelet-rich plasma and mesenchymal stem cells, beginning to arguably bridge a gap between standard orthopedic treatments and more invasive surgical methods. "We did a PRP injection, which is platelet-rich plasma, where we take his blood, we spin it down, we get the platelet rich layer. That's where it comes platelet rich plasma. And we injected that into the shoulder joint," Dr. Batterton explained about the first step of the treatment. The procedure was followed by a bone marrow aspiration to amplify the benefits, as told to FOX 10 Phoenix.
Remarkably, Dyess experienced significant improvements shortly after the procedures. He noted a decrease in pain from a level 8 to a 2 and was able to return to his gym routine five days a week, albeit not at the same intensity as before. According to a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix, Dyess indicated, "On the horizon, I do not even see a surgery out there for me right now based on what she's done to be able to help me."
