A Queens man has been charged in the tragic stabbings of his wife and their toddler daughter at their home in Ridgewood, as announced by Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz. Ernesto Cruz, the accused, faces charges of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and weapon possession. According to the official statement from the Queens District Attorney's Office, the victims, Ana Alexandra Pilatagsi Moposita and 2-year-old Analiz Cruz Pilatagsi, were found with multiple stab wounds to the torso.
Law enforcement officials were quickly to respond on the evening of July 19 to an assault report that led them to the scene of the crime. The the Queens District Attorney's Office statement recounted how officers arrived at the Forest Avenue apartment to discover the harrowing scene. Cruz was also found at the residence with self-inflicted stab wounds in what seemed to be a failed suicide attempt. District Attorney Katz emphasized the severity of the crime, stating, "New York City mourns the 2-year-old child and mother who were stabbed to death in their own home."
In a subsequent arraignment, Cruz was ordered held without bail by Queens Criminal Supreme Court Justice Kenneth Holder. The court has set October 16 as the date for Cruz's next appearance. According to the allegations, a conviction could lead to Cruz spending the rest of his life behind bars without the chance of parole. Assistant District Attorney Ryan Nicolosi of the Homicide Bureau is tasked with prosecuting this unsettling case.
While this case moves through the legal system, DA Katz called attention to the broader issue of domestic violence and urged anyone feeling unsafe at home to seek assistance. "The prosecutors in my office work closely with our service provider partners who can help with safety planning," Katz mentioned, as per the Queens District Attorney's Office.
