Rancho Cordova residents looking to weave through traffic on an eBike or eScooter should be aware of the rules of the road. The popularity of these devices has surged, and with that rise comes the need for clarification to ensure the safety of all road users. The City of Rancho Cordova recently shed light on this, detailing the laws under California jurisdiction that govern these modern modes of transportation.
For those pedaling into the future on an eBike, knowing your class is crucial. Class 1 eBikes assist riders up to 20 MPH, while Class 2 takes care of the propulsion all by itself with a hand throttle. Lastly, the Class 3 eBike helps a rider reach a brisk 28 MPH but comes equipped with a speedometer and mandates that riders under 18 don a helmet. Operating a moped, by California law, requires an M-1 or M-2 endorsement on the operator’s driver's license, aside from a regulation helmet strapped around every rider's head, regardless of their age.
Meanwhile, eScooter enthusiasts have their own set of rules to adhere to. Required to be 16 or older, riders cannot exceed the 15 MPH speed limit and are banned from rolling down sidewalks. Moreover, carrying a buddy isn't allowed, ensuring the eScooter’s mission for solo trips remains intact. A valid Driver's License or Instructional Permit is necessary to operate them legally, the City informs.
The City of Rancho Cordova statement reminds users that while technology sophisticates, certain truths remain unchanged: "Regardless of the type of device, ALL of them are required to abide by all traffic laws, just as a bicycle is." Moreover, amidst all this talk of electric assistance and motorized easement, the RCPD Traffic Unit is on standby, ready to answer questions either for those confused by paths and roadways marked for eBike/eScooter use or just needing a bit of extra guidance.
