Sacramento City Express reports that reconstruction of the Del Rio Trail Bridge in South Sacramento will begin in the coming weeks. The bridge has remained closed since the trail opened in May last year due to construction issues. The City found that the design did not meet required safety and design standards, leading to the decision to fully replace the structure, according to the City of Sacramento.
The City of Sacramento reached an agreement with the contractor to replace the Del Rio Trail Bridge after an engineering error was found. “I am pleased that we have come to an agreement with the contractor for the replacement of the Del Rio Trail Bridge,” said Councilmember Rick Jennings. The existing overhang will be removed and a new structure will be built. Construction work will cause night lane closures along Interstate 5, and Riverside Boulevard will have scheduled closures and detours outside of peak hours. City officials said they will provide updates and take steps to reduce traffic disruptions.
The Del Rio Trail Bridge is currently under construction, with work being coordinated with Caltrans and California State Parks. The City of Sacramento aims to complete the bridge and reopen the 4.8-mile trail by the end of the year. Updates will be provided as progress continues.
