According to a social media post by the St. Johns County Fire Rescue, a hazardous materials incident involving Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide (MEKP) – a substance that had triggered an exothermic reaction thus rendering the situation volatile – was the focus of the crisis.
Before entry, drones scouted the tumultuous scene, ensuring the safety of the Haz-Mat technicians—who were later, certified, made an entry to secure the material. This preemptive action allowed the emergency crew to evaluate conditions critically and develop a strategy without directly exposing themselves to the instability of the environment. The team reportedly managed to confine the dangerous chemicals, averting the threat of further complications.
"This was a coordinated response between Flagler Beach Fire Department, Flagler County Fire Rescue, and St. Johns County Fire Rescue, who all came together quickly and efficiently," detailed the statement from St. Johns County Fire Rescue.
