A controversial housing proposal by Royal Capital, involving the construction of a 200+ unit development at 9050 N. Swan Rd. in the 9th Aldermanic District, is meeting firm resistance from local residents and politicians alike, with a key committee meeting to discuss the project slated for tomorrow.
The 9th District’s representative has voiced strong opposition alongside constituents, warning against Royal Capital’s track record, as evidenced by the troublesome history of The Harmony, a Madison apartment complex where a sordid bevy of police-related incidents and overlooked code violations unfolded – including two homicides within a span of just months in 2023 as reported by an official statement.
In the same statement on City of Milwaukee, it was mentioned, "The trepidation residents are feeling is justified. Look no further than Royal Capital’s Madison apartment complex The Harmony." Following these incidents, a long list of further police interventions and unresolved building code infractions were cited as a forecast for the potential issues Royal Capital’s proposed development might import into the community.
Furthermore, suspicions loom over Royal Capital's revised proposal, scaled down from an ambitious 1,125 units to the current 200+; the 9th District’s representative, supporting neighbors, fears future expansions, and intent to reach the original figure to eventually overwhelm residents's desires, this speculation fostering distrust in the company’s agenda for growth as the neighborhood stands united in their opposition.
