Travelers flying in and out of Honolulu may need to adjust their itineraries as the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) embarks on a runway improvement project at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL). Starting from August 1, through August 20, Runway 8R-26L will be closed nightly between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., affecting flight schedules for 20 calendar days. HDOT announced this measure as part of its Runway and Taxiway Shoulders Rehabilitation Project, which aims to keep the airport in line with Federal Aviation Administration standards.

During the closure, pilots will have to rely on alternative runways including 8L-26R, 4L-26R, and 4R-22L for their arrivals and departures. This might cause some slight inconveniences to some, but HDOT has worked closely with airlines to ensure that the impact on flight operations is minimally disruptive. Travelers should, however, still check with their respective airlines for any flight-specific updates.

The project's focus is on critical infrastructure updates such as runway paving and drainage enhancements. These improvements are essential for maintaining the safety and regulatory compliance of the airfield. HDOT has stipulated that all planned closures and subsequent re-openings are subject to favorable weather conditions.

HDOT is well aware of the potential hike in noise levels that residents in the 'Ewa and Pearl City areas may experience. To prevent any further disturbance, they have strategized to efficiently manage the required work within the specified nightly hours. Meanwhile, the entire rehabilitation project is set to reach completion in October 2025. In a statement, HDOT expressed their gratitude towards the community for their "patience and understanding" as they continue to safely operate HNL.
