A man was found dead following a small apartment fire on Thursday morning, with the site now being investigated as a crime scene, officials have stated. The fire, which took place in Sacramento's Woodcrest Apartments located on Florin Road, prompted a response from the Sacramento Fire Department around 7:43 a.m., as reported by KCRA. The victim's condition, found within the smoldering remains, presented "unusual circumstances," prompting further investigation by Sacramento Police.
The Sacramento Fire Department discovered two small fires contained within the apartment, their cause yet to be determined, and neighbours were evacuated as a precaution, while it is said that the man was the only person present when the flames ignited. According to a CBS Sacramento report, the fires were believed to have been intentionally set, and the man's injuries, deemed suspicious, were not thermal in nature.
Capt. Justin Silva of the Sacramento Fire Department added weight to the gravity of the situation with his remarks captured by CBS Sacramento, "There were some unusual circumstances regarding this victim, that's where this whole incident shifted to where we ended up getting Sacramento police out here to investigate further what took place in that apartment unit," Details on the victim, who is believed to be a man in his 40s or 50s, have been withheld pending notification of kin and a deeper dive into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Firefighters and law enforcement remained on the scene well into the morning, meticulously combing through the ash and residue left by the fire and untimely demise. The progress of the investigation into the fire and subsequent fatality is expected to be methodical and thorough, with the Sacramento Fire Department notifying KCRA that unraveling the events leading to the fire and the man's death is set to be "a very slow process."
