In an effort to combat the sweltering heat gripping the region, Saint Louis County has partnered with the Salvation Army to open a cooling shelter this summer. The facility, located at 10740 Page Ave., St. Louis, MO 63132, opened its doors yesterday and will remain in operation through September 5, offering a range of supportive services to those in need.
With temperatures climbing, the shelter's availability is a vital respite. As per the announcement by Saint Louis County officials, services provided at the Salvation Army site will include around-the-clock staff support, three daily meals, laundry facilities, and case management services. Moreover, guests will have access to hygiene amenities such as showers, as well as phone access and programs for life skills and employment assistance.
Individuals seeking refuge from the heat can reach out by calling 211 for aid and information on how to gain entry to the shelter. The county and its partners are emphasizing the importance of this service as the state experiences hotter days, highlighting the health risks associated with prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
In addition to the full-service site, walk-in day services are available at Loaves and Fishes, located at 2055 Concourse Dr., Westport, MO 63146. While services at this location are more limited, they include emergency shelter referrals, case management assessments, and essentials such as laundry, hygiene, meals, and phone access for those in distress. Again, those in need are encouraged to call 211 to understand how they can benefit from the services on offer.
