According to a social media post by the Salem Police Department, officers responded on Sunday to reports of an individual armed with a pitchfork, intent on damaging property along 24th & Trade STS SE. The post describes how the man, upon confronting officers near Richmond School Park, wielded the pitchfork aggressively, which put a nearby family in potential danger.
The situation intensified as the man, ignoring verbal commands from the police, proceeded to swing the pitchfork dangerously close to an officer. When the suspect started advancing towards a family, police stepped in to shield them as they sought safety. The Salem Police Department's post noted, "Officers positioned themselves between the suspect and the family, who then hurried to a safe space." Despite being hit with two rounds of non-lethal munitions, the man only slightly faltered. It wasn't until police deployed a Taser that they were able to take the suspect into custody.
Once subdued, the man was taken for medical clearance before being detained and charged. The charges against him were severe as they encapsulated a range of offenses, including menacing and the unlawful use of a weapon.
