Salt Lake City residents have something to look forward to on Friday, July 11, as city officials are set to reopen a previously closed section of the Jordan River Parkway Trail. This portion of the trail, extending from Cottonwood Park to 700 North, had been off-limits since April due to environmental concerns and safety issues. According to Salt Lake City, during the closure, cleaning crews tackled overgrown vegetation and debris, which were removed to prevent criminal activities and to enhance visibility for trail users.
In addition to cleaning efforts, the Department of Public Lands worked to improve the trail itself, with a newly designed and relocated trail segment that now features a wider asphalt surface to clearly separate users and to hopefully enhance safety. Security measures will also be amped up following Friday's reopening, with a boosted presence of Salt Lake City Park Rangers expected to execute patrols daily within this section.
These improvements align with Salt Lake City's broader revitalization strategy, which includes a phase dedicated to creating a new playground and open space near Backman Elementary School set to open in August. As detailed by Salt Lake City, this commitment to refurbishing local infrastructure is both extensive and ongoing. Part of the work planned to move forward includes the installation of public safety cameras, additional lighting, and several other elements detailed in Salt Lake City's Public Safety Plan.
