The City of San Diego has issued a fresh update on the College Area Community Plan, offering residents a chance to weigh in on the city's future for the first time in over three decades. The updated plan, now in its second draft iteration, incorporates feedback from the public following an initial draft release earlier this year, according to a report by InsideSanDiego.org.
These community plans are designed to strategically outline the development and growth of neighborhoods, aligning with Blueprint SD, the 2024 General Plan update that aims to sustainably concentrate homes, jobs, and amenities near transit and parks. Heidi Vonblum, the City Planning Director, emphasized the plan's importance for sustainable growth over the next 30 years, stating via the City News, "The College Area Community Plan Update is critical to ensuring this community grows sustainably over the next 30 years and in a way that best serves its residents." Vonblum further encouraged residents "to stay engaged and share their feedback as this plan moves forward."
Key enhancements proposed in the latest draft include fostering the creation of new homes and businesses within mixed-use villages, prioritizing a mobility framework that ensures safety and comfort for all commuter types, and designing pedestrian-friendly streets. Also on the docket is the development of new public spaces, like a linear park planned to span Montezuma Road.
The public now has an opportunity to participate actively and to provide input on the draft until September 7. Comments and suggestions are solicited through the dedicated College Area Community Plan Update webpage. After the comment period, the plan will be scrutinized by various committees, including the College Area Community Planning Group and the City Council’s Land Use & Housing Committee, which will provide additional public engagement opportunities. The City Council's final review is anticipated by year-end.
