As San Diego gears up for its grand Fourth of July celebration, the Big Bay Boom, city dwellers are advised to make transit plans well ahead of time. According to a news release from the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS), the annual spectacle is expected to draw tens of thousands to the downtown waterfront, with the MTS providing boosted Trolley services to manage the crowd and the inevitable traffic snarls.
MTS has planned additional Trolley services on all lines servicing the Big Bay Boom to ensure a smoother ride to the fireworks. Considering the surge of attendees, it's a welcome relief that each Trolley line is just steps away from prime viewing spots for the show, which kicks off at 9 PM across various locations along the San Diego Bay. MTS suggests that, to avoid the rush, spectators should hop aboard at stations such as County Center/Little Italy, Santa Fe Depot, America Plaza, Seaport Village, Convention Center, and Gaslamp Quarter.
Following the fireworks, the Trolley service will continue facilitating departures with increased frequency until late evening. Notably, the Green Line Trolleys are scheduled to leave stations every 15 minutes or better, with additional service until roughly 9:50 PM. Also, MTS has announced the "Friends Ride Free Promotion," which allows each fare-paying traveler to bring a guest at no additional cost on all MTS bus routes and Trolley lines for the holiday.
To avoid any hassle on the event day, MTS encourages the public to download the PRONTO app and load their virtual cards with a minimum of $5 for adult round-trip fares, insisting they tap or scan at station validators before boarding. MTS also reminds that contactless payments are now accepted, including credit cards and mobile payment options, facilitating an expedited boarding process. Remember, each person must have their payment method, as multiple fares cannot be purchased using a single account or device. Information about the Youth Ride Free program and free parking options at various Trolley system stations is available on the MTS website.
