Starting August 10, Santa Monica's Big Blue Bus service is set to undergo a significant overhaul designed to enhance the public transit experience. Announced improvements are introducing more frequent bus routes, longer service hours, and expansion of coverage areas under the initiative called Brighter Blue, which encourages sustainable transit options over driving. As Santa Monica residents gear up for these changes, the focus is on increased convenience and accessibility, making public transport a more attractive choice.
Notable upgrades include more frequent journeys on Route 3 and Route 7 during both weekdays and weekends, with buses expected every 10 minutes, or better, for most of the day on weekdays, and every 15 minutes, or better, over the weekend. Route 43 is also seeing an extension, and will now provide midday and weekend services connecting to Downtown Santa Monica. Moreover, the restoration of Route 9 will once again serve passengers in the Pacific Palisades area. As per a statement obtained by the city of Santa Monica, there's anticipation for user-friendly features like enhanced bus shelters and stops, catering to an improved rider experience.
The timing of buses is being targeted to cater to a fast-paced urban life where waiting margins are thin. Route 3 is all set up to provide seamless connectivity to the recently opened LAX/Metro Transit Center and SoFi Stadium, adding to the convenience of travel for local commuters and visitors alike. "This service change brings exciting improvements for Big Blue Bus riders," Director of Transportation Anuj Gupta mentioned in a news release. "With the opening of the LAX/Metro Center, Santa Monica residents and visitors can enjoy a seamless ride to and from Downtown Santa Monica, LAX and SoFi Stadium this summer."
