A man on a scooter was hit and killed by a light rail train around 1:45 p.m. on Monday near 19th and T streets in midtown Sacramento. Sacramento Regional Transit said the man may have been wearing headphones and did not respond to warning signals before the train struck him. Light rail service on the Blue Line was temporarily stopped between 13th Street and City College stations, according to ABC10.
In response to the incident, police closed the area to traffic while an investigation was conducted. KCRA reported that the road was reopened just after 7 p.m. The Sacramento Police Department's Major Collision Investigation Unit and crime scene investigators have taken the lead on this investigation.
Sgt. Dan Wiseman, a spokesperson for the Sacramento Police Department, told KCRA, "We see a lot of people, unfortunately, who are distracted by certain devices. They have headphones and things like that. And our message has not really changed just to be aware of your surroundings. And don't assume that other people on the roadways that you're sharing the roadways with are paying attention, because sometimes they're not." Authorities issued a reminder for the public to stay alert when navigating busy streets.
