In a move matched to bolster the ranks of the United States military, Senators Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) and John Fetterman (D-PA) have reintroduced a bill that would open up military service to DACA recipients. The Fight for the American Dream Act, as it's called, extends the possibility for these individuals to don the uniform and, following their service, grants them a pathway towards U.S. citizenship, according to the Office of the Senator.

The bill also aims to simplify the process by which immigrants who have served honorably can attain citizenship, creating a single procedure for naturalization. This legislative push coincides with a period of substantive recruitment shortfalls within the military branches. Meanwhile, states like Arizona are home to nearly 22,000 DACA recipients who could potentially fill these ranks, as reported by the Office of the Senator.

As a veteran himself, Senator Gallego brings a personal perspective to the table. "I fought in Iraq, and I know that on the battlefield, what matters isn’t whether you have the right papers, it’s whether you’re willing to put on the uniform and risk your life for this country. And if you can do that, you should have the chance to earn citizenship," Office of the Senator's statement read. Senator Fetterman echoes this sentiment, pointing to the integrity and dedication of DACA recipients. "Dreamers have shown their dedication—going to school, raising families, and building businesses in our communities— and if they’re willing to put on the uniform and defend this country, they deserve a clear, fair path to citizenship," Fetterman noted.

The proposal does not emerge in a vacuum. Previously, Gallego introduced similar legislation when he was a member of the House, and the issue has persistent advocates in Representatives Salud Carbajal (CA-24) and Gil Cisneros (CA-31), who have introduced companion legislation. Additionally, in May, Gallego released a broad framework aimed at securing the Southwest border and enacting comprehensive immigration reform, which includes expanding citizenship pathways for both DREAMers and long-term undocumented community contributors, as per the Office of the Senator.
