Commuters in Upper Manhattan faced disruptions on the No. 1 subway line yesterday, with service finally restored in the evening after a water leak caused hours of suspension. As reported by ABC 7 New York, the source of the problem was a leak at the 168th Street - Washington Heights station, a situation attributed to the failure of a century-old infrastructure.
According to MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber, the repairs were a part of an ongoing effort that, to put plainly, "did not go well." He said, "For 100 years no one has fixed the structure and there was water leaking, we are fixing it, the first attempt to fix it did not go well, and we are now in the process of clearing out all the water to make sure we can provide service, hopefully in the evening rush," he told ABC 7 New York. Service had been suspended since 6 a.m. between 137 St-City College and Dyckman St stations.
Meanwhile, CBS News New York detailed the inconvenience faced by passengers, reporting comments from disgruntled riders. "A lot of delay -- at least 45 minutes or more -- and no signs. I came up and down the steps with a cane. No signs," a commuter affected by the suspension told CBS News New York. The service disruption forced many commuters to seek alternative routes, with some "to detour to the bus -- the shuttle bus," as one rider explained.
Metro-North offered some relief by cross-honoring MetroCard holders to facilitate travel from Marble Hill to Grand Central, and the MTA dispatched shuttle buses along Broadway. Following the clear-up, the MTA planned to run a test train to ensure that the restoration of service was functional and safe. Despite the resolution, residual delays were expected to affect the line for several hours after service resumed.
