Members of the Shelby County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) are stepping up their negotiation game, following recent training with the Tennessee Crisis Negotiators Association (TCNA) at the Memphis Police Department Training Academy. The session held last Friday was a hands-on opportunity for local law enforcement to sharpen their skills in the delicate dance of crisis resolution. According to a social media post from the SCSO, the day saw an exchange of strategies and experiences among officials from various departments.
The training featured presentations of case studies led by Lieutenant Calvin Grantham, among others, imparting real-world scenarios to negotiators from various agencies, including the FBI-Memphis Field Office and neighboring police departments from Bartlett, Collierville, and Germantown. These collaborative sessions are critical to maintaining an edge in crises where communication can mean the difference between life and death. Certain participants, such as Lt. Grantham and TCNA board members, including Inspector Chris Rossi from Collierville Police Department, Lieutenant Catrina Borden from Wilson County Sheriff's Office, and Colonel Vincent Beasley from Memphis Police Department, were highlighted for their contributions on the SCSO's Facebook page.
Such gatherings underscore the importance of crisis negotiation teams—units specifically trained to handle high-stakes situations involving hostages or individuals in the grip of mental health crises. The emphasis is on resolving conflicts without force whenever possible, a goal that requires a blend of patience, empathy, and strategic communication. The SCSO and its regional partners are committed to rigorous training that can save lives in these tense encounters.
