In the quiet hours of early morning, a routine call quickly escalated into a deadly confrontation in Shorewood. Police officers were mobilized to the 4100 block of North Bartlett Avenue at approximately 2:51 a.m., after receiving reports of a shooting, as posted on Shorewood Police Department's social media. On arrival at the scene, one officer was shot and fortunately spared from serious injury thanks to a bullet-resistant vest. The officer was treated at a local hospital and is on track for a full recovery.
During the incident, law enforcement located two individuals directly involved, one of whom was pronounced dead. A second person received non-life-threatening injuries and was promptly taken to a hospital for care. "We share our condolences to the family and loved ones of the individual who lost their life in this tragic and senseless act of violence," stated the Shorewood Police Department. They also acknowledged the risks officers face daily, appreciating the equipment that protected their colleague.
The suspect implicated in this incident eluded immediate capture, instigating a pursuit that came to a head near West Reservoir Avenue and North Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Milwaukee. Amid the chase and its termination, gunfire was exchanged between the fleeing suspect and police, culminating in the suspect receiving fatal gunshot wounds. Shorewood Police clarified that its officers were not part of the pursuit or the final confrontation leading to the suspect’s death.
Names of the victims, the suspect, and the injured officer have been withheld by the Shorewood Police Department as the investigation proceeds. The local Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation has taken the lead on investigating the Shorewood incident, with additional support from the Milwaukee Area Investigative Team.
