
Tragedy struck Southeast D.C. this week as 50-year-old Lawrence Meekins was fatally shot in what is now an active homicide investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). According to the MPD's release, officers were dispatched yesterday after reports of gunfire in the 1800 block of E Street.
The call came in at around 2:05 a.m., and when police arrived, they found Meekins with gunshot wounds—despite the DC Fire and EMS's lifesaving attempts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The police are now urging the public to come forward with any information related to the shooting, specifically noting that there's a substantial monetary reward for tips leading to an arrest and conviction in this case while also ensuring people that they should not attempt to take any action themselves but should instead call the police or use the text tip line.
Meekins, a resident of Northwest D.C., his unexpected death leaves unanswered questions in a community grappling with the realities of gun violence. The MPD is reaching out to the public for help with the investigation, offering up to $25,000 for information that could solve this homicide, as stated in their press release.
