Springfield's battle against open-air drug dealing has recently seen a crackdown by the city's Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU). An operation conducted on July 3rd led to the arrest of three individuals on Worthington Street, as reported by the Springfield Police Department. The operation was part of a response to ongoing complaints from local businesses about the flagrant drug activities plaguing the neighborhood, particularly around the 700 block of Worthington Street and the area surrounding the Friends of the Homeless Shelter.

Undercover work by the FIU Detectives keenly observed Merkin Andrade, who they suspected to quickly engage in drug transactions. The detectives subsequently saw Juan Ponce allegedly engaging in a deal with Andrade and another suspect, Glendalys Ramos. When officers decided to converge upon the group, Ponce was detained and found with cocaine, while Andrade attempted to quickly flee, only to be apprehended with more of the substance.

The situation escalated as Ramos was caught trying to discard a substantial quantity of heroin. During the arrests, a total of 70 bags of heroin and nine pre-packaged bags of marijuana were seized from the location where Andrade and Ramos were initially spotted. Moreover, the apprehended individuals were found carrying amounts of cash suspected to be proceeds from drug sales.

Andrade faces several charges including "Distribution of a Class B Drug" and "Resisting Arrest," while Ramos's charges comprise "Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class A Drug" and "Conspiracy to Violate Drug Law." Ponce was charged with "Possession of a Class B Drug," as per the agreement to information released by the Springfield Police. All suspects are Springfield residents, and each was 35 years old at the time of the arrest.
