As part of their celebration of Parks and Recreation Month, the St. Johns County Parks and Recreation Department took a significant step toward inclusivity with their All-Abilities Paddle event last Saturday. This initiative is not just your average kayaking outing; it's a testament to the department's commitment to ensure outdoor activities are accessible to everyone, regardless of their physical or mental abilities. Outdoor Recreation Supervisor Kelly Ussia, in a video produced by the Office of Public Affairs, emphasized the importance of such adaptive equipment for community engagement.
Participants, including those with disabilities and their family members, were treated to a guided journey to view the sunset over the majestic St. Johns River. In a statement obtained by the source publication, Ussia explained, "The All-Abilities Paddle allows anybody, regardless of ability, to get out on the waterway." She further stressed, "It’s really important to offer this equipment, because we want to make sure that all residents, regardless of their limitations, can get out and enjoy what beautiful St. Johns County has to offer." This focus on inclusivity isn't just an add-on; it's integrated into every Parks and Recreation kayaking and paddleboarding trip, provided the necessary equipment is requested during the online registration process.
Van Williams, who has participated in a past All-Abilities Paddle with his service dog Troy, shared his delight in the program's diversity. Williams told the source publication, "I really thought this was something that was for other people, and it was something I could watch and just kind of think about, but now I get to go out and do it. I really enjoy it, so it’s something I put on my schedule every month." The wide array of adaptive equipment, such as paddle pivots for one-arm control, seat and lumbar cushions, transfer benches, outriggers for additional stability, and pedal-drive paddleboards, reflect the department's thorough approach to inclusivity.
The gear provided by the Parks and Recreation Department is designed to break barriers and offer joyful experiences on water for everyone. Ussia passionately invited the community to engage with nature, "We have so much adaptive equipment that we encourage you to come out and use," she said.
