A St. Louis County man has been handed an 18-month prison sentence for his involvement in dogfighting activities. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Terrell Williams, 52, will also face three years of supervised release following his prison term. Additionally, Williams has agreed to surrender all dogs and training equipment seized during the federal investigation into his activities.

In a case that highlights the continuing issue of illegal dogfighting, Williams hosted at least two dog fights in the basement of his Riverview, Missouri, home during the months of July and August of 2021. Williams not only facilitated these events but, had bred, and trained multiple bull terriers or terrier mixes to participate in this brutal sport from Sept. 5, 2020, to May 1, 2022.

The investigation into Williams' activities culminated in a court-sanctioned raid on June 22, 2022, leading to the recovery of eight bull terrier mixes and three Yorkshire terriers. The animals displayed signs of aggression and fear. "Multiple dogs appeared to be aggressive towards humans and other dogs, anxious or fearful," as stated in the press release.

Williams’ guilty plea in March to a felony dogfighting charge was a key factor in determining his sentence, which could have carried a maximum of five years in prison. The FBI led the investigation, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jillian Anderson prosecuted the case. U.S. District Judge Sarah E. Pitlyk delivered the sentence last Friday, concluding a case that revealed further details about the illegal dogfighting network. According to the plea agreement, some of the dogs involved displayed injuries consistent with dog bites or fighting.
