A somber air grips St. Louis as the County Prosecutor's Office charges 31-year-old Ryan Larose with first-degree arson, following a house fire on Telford Drive that has left residents in shock and a community questioning safety in their own homes. Larose, from the 2300 block of Telford Drive, is being held on a $100,000 cash-only bond, with the stark image of his booking photo circulating in the press and among the public.
The events unfolded on the evening of July 12, when a house fire erupted, compelling neighbors and emergency responders to the scene. According to a statement from the St. Louis County Police, a woman and her husband, out for an evening stroll, noticed billows of smoke coming from the residence. The homeowner, an elderly woman, was found in a confused state, having narrowly escaped the flames that began in the basement. She subsequently required hospital treatment, likely for smoke inhalation.
Detectives received a crucial piece of evidence from a neighbor’s security footage, implicating Larose in the crime. The footage shows Larose entering the house an hour before smoke became visible and leaving just before the emergence of the smoke. Fire Chief of Lemay confirmed the fire's suspicious nature, describing multiple points of origin and burners on the stove set to high, further raising concerns of a deliberate act to endanger life and property.
The tragedy compounded when, on Monday, the elderly victim and another householder died in a separate blaze, with both fires connected by the thread of Larose's relationship to the victims. Larose, known to be the grandson of one of the deceased, and to have previously listed both fire-engulfed properties as his residence, has thus far resisted cooperation with authorities, refusing even the simple act of fingerprinting during the booking process.
