A Suffolk County police officer was shot in the face while serving a warrant, and a man was charged with murder following a homicide probe in North Bay Shore, reports say. Nieves Reyes, 48, allegedly opened fire when officers attempted to execute a search warrant at his residence, according to ABC7NY. The officer, who is also a Navy veteran and a father of two, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and has been released from the hospital.
The sequence of events leading to Reyes' arrest began when neighbors discovered the body of Eugene Allen, 66, a mechanic reportedly slain amidst an ongoing dispute involving Reyes, who is also a mechanic. Surveillance footage played a significant role in identifying the suspect. When officers approached Reyes' home early Thursday, he responded with a barrage of gunfire, as per details from the New York Post. The arraignment on Friday concluded with the judge remanding Reyes without bail.
The injured officer, whose name has not been released, faced surgery for a wound on his cheek. "We are very fortunate today, getting shot in the face is a very lethal type area to be shot, this officer's wound was literally a half inch away from his eye, it was up on his cheek," Dr. James Vosswinkel of Stony Brook University Hospital told ABC7NY. The suspect is facing charges of murder and the attempted murder of a police officer.
Residents of Bay Shore recounted a scene filled with blood and police activity on the night of the discovery of Allen's body. The shooting incident led to brief barricading by the suspect before his surrender. Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina shared with reporters, "He’s got a smile on his face — I think he’s in a lot of pain — but I think he understands that this could have gone a lot worse, so I think he’s happy to be alive and we’re happy that he's alive," according to the New York Post interview. Doctors indicated that if the bullet had been a mere half inch in a different direction, the officer could have been blinded or worse.
The ongoing investigation continues to uncover the details surrounding the dispute that culminated in lethal violence and the wounding of a law enforcement officer in the line of duty.
