As the peak of fire season grips the west, Summit County, Utah, is getting ahead of the curve with some proactive advice for residents, because when it comes to wildfires, it’s not about if, but when. According to Summit County, in a social media post: "Fire season is underway, and the best form of prevention is preparation!" This simple message underscores the importance of individual and community preparedness in the face of natural threats.
The county has outlined specific steps for locals to keep informed and ready, steps that can make the difference when seconds count, including signing up for emergency alerts through Everbridge to get evacuation notices and instructions should a fire threaten. Residents are encouraged to text "SCFIRE" to 91896 to receive updates on current fires, weather, and burn restrictions, and the call to follow the county’s social media channels on Facebook and Twitter/X is a nod to the power of real-time information dissemination through platforms commonly in the palm of one's hand.
In step with their encouragement to stay informed, Summit County has also reminded residents to adhere to existing fire restrictions, currently at Stage 1 as of July 11th. Stage 1 restrictions are the first line of defense, setting out the do's and don’ts when it comes to fire usage, a fundamental prevention mechanism to limit human-caused fires, which account for the majority of wildfires. All the necessary information and links for taking these precautions can be conveniently found at summitcounty.info/fire, the county's dedicated fire resource page.
