The Metropolitan Police Department has reported a breakthrough in a case that unsettled commuters last year, with the arrest of a suspect linked to two separate carjackings that transpired in Northeast during 2024. According to a press release published by MPD, the incidents, both involving armed suspects commandeering rideshare vehicles, occurred within a day of each other on April 12 and April 13, 2024, respectively.

Detectives from MPD's First and Sixth Districts have been working the case, which saw the first event where a handgun was revealed by passengers of a rideshare in the 600 block of 9th Street, Northeast. The driver was subsequently forced from the car, and although the vehicle was later recovered, the experience for the victim remains indelibly etched as a harrowing encounter with violent crime. In a second instance, in the 100 block of 33rd Street, Northeast, an attempt at armed carjacking was thwarted when the victim managed to escape in their vehicle—a small victory set against the precarious backdrop of public safety within vehicular services.

The suspect, now 18 but a juvenile at the time of the offenses, was taken into custody on Monday, under a DC Superior Court custody order. The arrest, which stems from the thorough work of MPD investigators, has led to the young man being charged with two counts of Armed Carjacking (gun). While this development marks progress, MPD continues its investigation to apprehend an additional suspect still at large.

MPD is asking for the public’s help to find the remaining suspect in these incidents. A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Anyone with information is urged to call (202) 727-9099 or text a tip to 50411.
