In a recent turn of events, a suspected thief was apprehended by Hillsborough County deputies after trying to hide in a sewer near the Brandon Town Center Mall. The incident, which culminated in a tricky hide-and-seek, unfolded last Friday at around 5:20 p.m., WFLA reports.
Upon receiving a report of retail theft, deputies swiftly responded to the scene where mall security suggested that the suspect had scampered off into a nearby wooded area. Utilizing a drone with live video capabilities, law enforcement spotted Ricardo Claudio Diaz, 55, as he emerged from a sewer grate thinking the coast was clear, FOX 13 News confirmed.
The drone’s aid was pivotal for the deputies on the ground as, it enabled them to pinpoint Diaz's precise location and effectuate an arrest. The suspect now faces several charges which include wearing a hood or mask on the property of another, felony petit theft, and resisting an officer without violence, as detailed by The Tampa Free Press.
As per the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the success of this operation serves as a reminder of the agency's comprehensive capabilities. “You can try to hide, but when #teamHCSO is in the air and on the ground, there’s nowhere to run,” the Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook, according to the same WFLA report.
