A vehicle pursuit turned fatal last Thursday after Cedar Hill Police officers engaged in a high-speed chase that ended with an officer-involved shooting. The incident around 2:00 p.m. started when officers attempted to pull over an allegedly impaired driver in the 700 block of Highway 67. The driver, however, chose to flee, leading police on a chase that spilled over into the City of Dallas.
The pursuit concluded approximately 16 minutes later near Town Creek Drive and Glen Oaks Boulevard, where the suspect exited the vehicle and attempted escape on foot into a wooded area. During the ensuing foot chase, "one Cedar Hill officer discharged his firearm, striking the suspect," according to a post on the Cedar Hill Police Department's Facebook page. Life-saving measures were administered by the officers present until EMS personnel arrived; however, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased, described only as a white male, has not been confirmed at this time.
In standard compliance with protocol following an officer-involved shooting, the officer in question has been placed on administrative leave. The incident is now under investigation by the Dallas Police Department's Special Investigations Unit, with oversight provided by the Dallas County Public Integrity Division. Details on this matter are still forthcoming, and the officer's actions, as well as the circumstances leading up to the shooting, are being thoroughly reviewed.
