The Pet Resource Center (PRC) is currently operating at over capacity and is in dire need of community assistance to help manage the situation. The center has issued a call to action, asking for residents to adopt, foster, or even just spend the day with these dogs to offer them some reprieve from the sweltering heat.
According to the Hillsborough County newsroom, the PRC staff is employing all means at their disposal to keep the dogs comfortable—utilizing large fans, splash pads, and hosing down the kennels so dogs can lie on the cooler floors. Despite, these efforts, the extreme heat and overcrowded conditions are making it difficult to maintain a safe environment for all the animals.
The PRC's Adventure Tails program is one initiative that allows members of the public to take a dog out for the day, giving the animals a chance to enjoy a different environment, perhaps one that's cooler or simply less crowded. In addition to offering dogs temporary homes, the PRC is appealing to the community for donations like frozen broth cubes or chilled treat bowls, which can be dropped off at their location at 440 N. Falkenburg Rd., Tampa, FL 33619 during business hours.
For those who are not in a position to foster or adopt, spreading the word and financial contributions can also make a significant impact. Residents can easily donate much-needed supplies via the PRC's Amazon wish list. Hillsborough County Animal Control offers further guidance on protecting pets from summer heat, including a list of do's and don'ts for pet care in extreme weather.
