The Tampa Police Department is working to untangle the events that led to an early yesterday shooting on N. Whittier Street, which has left a man fighting for life in the hospital. According to a press release posted on the City of Tampa's official website, the ShotSpotter system, which detects gunfire, alerted authorities to the incident, followed by an emergency call concerning a gunshot victim.
Officers responded promptly to the 3600 block of N. Whittier St. at around 6 am, a mere four minutes after the initial ShotSpotter alerts. There they discovered an adult black male in his early 30s lying injured on the ground. The victim, who suffered from a gunshot wound, was provided with immediate first aid by the officers before Tampa Fire Rescue took over and rushed him to a local facility where he remains in critical condition.
Two vehicles at the scene were found with multiple bullet holes, suggesting a shootout might have taken place. The Tampa Police Department is digging deep, attempting to identify anyone involved in the shooting and to piece together what exactly transpired on that quiet Sunday morning street.
This incident is believed to be isolated with no ongoing threat to the general public, the investigators have affirmed. The detectives' efforts continue as they pursue leads and work to make sense of the evidence at hand. The Tampa community holds its breath, awaiting answers and hoping for a swift resolution to yet another episode of violence that shatters the calm of their everyday lives.
