Target continues to expand its presence in New York with two new store openings, one of which has already made its debut in Astoria, Queens, with another planned for Bridgehampton. As reported by ABC 7 New York, the Astoria location holds particular significance for store director Faye Cardoso, who began her career at Target 25 years ago as a part-time cashier and now returns to her roots, spearheading the operations of the brand's latest outlet.
In her new role, Cardoso aims to quickly foster a community-centric workplace, already having hired about 100 locals, including those she shares personal connections with from her past in Astoria. Cardoso told ABC 7 New York, "It's really nice to hire the children or the parents of people I went to school with." Emphasizing inclusivity, the Astoria store has also recruited employees like Gabe Acosta, who has autism, and will earn a starting wage above $18 an hour — surpassing the city minimum of $16.50.
Amidst a broader nationwide expansion reported by LoHud, Target is adding this Astoria location as well as another store on Montauk Highway in Bridgehampton. These openings are part of a wave of new stores rolling out across 22 states. Target's strategic positioning of new stores is guided by local demand, convenience, and existing store locations.
Keeping community needs at the forefront, the Astoria store is not only a source of employment but also part of a city initiative to rejuvenate 31st Street. Tom Grech, the Queens Chamber of Commerce president and CEO, acknowledged the value of anchor stores, such as Target, in bolstering local small businesses. He remarked, "It's a great shot in the arm during a difficult time." The strategy appears to effortlessly blend community upliftment with Target’s business model, which encompasses updated store layouts and extensive merchandise offerings. ABC 7 New York reported.
While details on the Bridgehampton store's inauguration remain under wraps, the excitement that has accompanied the Astoria store's opening — complete with giveaways, games, and freebies — is undoubtedly expected to echo in the upcoming launch. The new Target locations strive to serve as modern, convenient hubs for shoppers, featuring a blend of groceries, electronics, apparel, and home goods to meet the varied needs of the local populace. With the Astoria store now open for business, it sets a path Target hopes to continue as it navigates the retail landscape of 2025 and beyond.
