CBS has announced that "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" will conclude in May 2026. According to CBS News, the network described the decision as "purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night." While the show has maintained strong ratings, CBS stated its respect and admiration for Colbert and confirmed that no replacement is planned, indicating the end of the franchise’s run on the network.
As reported by Gothamist, the end of the show could negatively impact New York’s economy, with Governor Kathy Hochul’s office anticipating the loss of hundreds of local jobs tied to its production. The state had previously supported "The Late Show" by providing CBS with a $16 million incentive package aimed at keeping the program within New York City’s entertainment sector. Signed in 2014, the agreement was intended to maintain hundreds of production-related jobs and boost local businesses through the show's steady viewership.
Stephen Colbert, who succeeded David Letterman as host in 2015, announced the conclusion of the show to his studio audience and later to viewers at home, conveying a mix of appreciation and reflection. "It's not just the end of our show, but it's the end of 'The Late Show' on CBS." He also thanked the 'Tiffany Network' and expressed gratitude to the audience that has watched the program each night, according to remarks from the taping, CBS News reported.
The announcement has also prompted a reaction from political figures, including California Senator Adam Schiff, who took to social media to question the reasoning behind the show's cancellation. Schiff, who appeared on "The Late Show" the same day the news was made public, stated, "If Paramount and CBS ended the Late Show for political reasons, the public deserves to know. And deserves better." As per report by CBS News, the decision comes amid broader developments at Paramount, including a $16 million settlement with former President Trump and an $8.4 billion merger with Skydance Media pending FCC approval, which have contributed to ongoing speculation surrounding the show's cancellation.
