In an unexpected act of violence, three Lorain police officers were gravely wounded during an ambush in Lorain, Ohio. As reported by Cleveland19, Officers Phillip Wagner and Brent Payne sustained critical injuries from several gunshot wounds and are now under intensive care at MetroHealth in Cleveland. A fellow officer, Peter Gale, was also shot in the hand and received treatment at Mercy Hospital.
Acting Lorain Police Chief Michael Failing informed the media that the shooting occurred around 1 p.m. at Missouri and Colorado Avenues, while Wagner and Gale were having a shared lunch inside their vehicles. The assailant was said to be armed with a high-powered rifle and "lying in wait" for the officers, reported The Chronicle. Officer Payne, in an attempt to assist Wagner and Gale, was shot multiple times while still in his patrol car. Other officers on the scene then took the drastic step of transporting the wounded to the hospital in their patrol cars.
The suspect, identified by Lorain County Coroner Dr. Frank Miller as 28-year-old Michael Parker, was pronounced dead at the scene. Initial reports indicated the possibility of a second suspect, which instigated an extensive search by authorities, including the deployment of a State Highway Patrol helicopter and drones. However, the presence of a second shooter was later ruled out. "We dispelled that, so we have cleared that possibility now," Sheriff Jack Hall clarified to The Chronicle.
