Last Wednesday evening, a heartbreaking event unfolded in Long Beach as a mother accidentally ran over her one-year-old child, resulting in fatal injuries. According to KTLA, the incident occurred around 6 p.m. in the 5500 block of Ackerfield Avenue. The Long Beach Police Department was called to the scene, where the Long Beach Fire Department was already providing medical aid to the child.
The toddler was swiftly transported to a local hospital, but tragically, "despite lifesaving efforts by paramedics and medical staff, succumbed to their injuries," as detailed in the LBPD statement that KTLA obtained. In what appears to be a deeply unfortunate accident, the LBPD's preliminary investigation found that the mother was moving her car within an apartment complex carport when her child unexpectedly walked in front of the vehicle and was struck.
The Long Beach Police Department confirmed that neither impaired driving nor distracted driving seemed to have been involved in the collision. As is standard procedure, the identity of the victim has not been disclosed due to the child’s age, keeping the family’s privacy in mind during this time of unimaginable grief.
Authorities are reaching out to witnesses who might have seen the incident unfold to come forward with any information they may have. Detective Ashley Van Holland of the Long Beach Police Department's Collision Investigation Detail provided contact details for anyone with knowledge of the event, urging them to reach out. As reported by a Long Beach Police Department press release, "Anonymous tips may be submitted through 'LA Crime Stoppers' by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or visiting www.LACrimeStoppers.org."
