An incident at Jerome's Town Hall culminated tragically on Thursday when a 65-year-old man took his own life, as confirmed by local law enforcement officials. Authorities reported to the parking lot around 2:30 p.m., encountering an individual who had sought to discuss a civil matter with a judge. According to Jerome Police, when he learned the judge was unavailable to address his issue, the man became visibly distressed. This detail came in a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix.
Expressing anti-government sentiments and suicidal thoughts, including the desire for 'suicide by cop,' the man then placed a call requesting a welfare check on himself in the Town Hall's lot, as he began to depart, a Jerome Police Department officer saw the man place a handgun on the dashboard of a Grey Chevrolet Suburban. Acting on an abundance of caution, the Verde Valley SWAT team was called to the location. The Journal AZ further explained that the area surrounding Town Hall was affected as police diverted traffic in Jerome south on Main Street due to the unfolding situation.
Extended communications between dispatch personnel and the man took place while law enforcement awaited SWAT's arrival. Sgt. Nicole Florisi of Jerome Police, in a statement to Journal AZ, stated that after a brief confrontation, the man was found deceased in his vehicle, shortly after 4:27 p.m., with a pistol resting in his lap. The tragic resolution came despite concerted efforts by the authorities to achieve a peaceful outcome.
Medical personnel who were promptly at the scene detected a faint pulse, initiating life-saving measures, but ultimately the man was declared dead at the hospital. While the identity of the man remains withheld pending next of kin notification, the Jerome Police Department has stated that the investigation into this incident is actively ongoing, with more information to be released in due time. This information was reiterated in reports by both FOX 10 Phoenix and Journal AZ.
