A couple's night out turned tragic on Veterans Memorial Drive in Harris County, as a man was killed and his partner later succumbed to her injuries following a hit-and-run incident while they were cycling. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office reports that the accident occurred around 10:50 p.m. last night, near the intersection with Fallbrook Drive. According to Click2Houston, emergency responders transported both victims to a nearby hospital shortly after the crash.
Daniel Perez was initially hit by a southbound vehicle, a 2020 Toyota RAV4, as he crossed the road. The driver of the RAV4 stopped and cooperated with authorities, showing no signs of intoxication. Krystal Calvillo, Perez’s girlfriend, had been cycling with him and went to his aid after witnessing the crash. While attending to Perez, both were struck by another vehicle, which then fled the scene. The identity of this second vehicle, along with its driver, remains unknown as the search continues, as reported by KHOU.
The first victim, Perez, died shortly after arriving at the hospital. Meanwhile, Calvillo fought for her life but ultimately passed away due to the injuries sustained in the collision. "Both Perez and Calvillo were taken to area hospitals. Perez was later pronounced dead. Calvillo, who was initially listed in critical condition, died at HCA Houston Northwest Hospital from her injuries," as per a statement obtained by KHOU.
The sheriff's deputies indicated that preliminary investigations suggest the bicycles may not have had safety lights, and neither victim was wearing a helmet. As the authorities pursue the hit-and-run driver, the community has been urged, if in possession of any pertinent information, to contact the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division.
